The truth about DBK's aspect ratio
The Truth About DBK's Aspect Ratio?!Friday, July 17th, 2009 @ 2:31 PM CDT
Ever since the announcement of DragonBall Kai there has been much confusion amongst fans. Unfortunately, most of this confusion stemmed from assumptions and misinformation. In the end, everything that we initially knew, while not completely wrong, had turned out to be misleading. However, there was one piece of information that we knew was indeed fact; the series would be presented in high definition in a 16:9 widescreen format. This fact had been confirmed in early February in Weekly Shounen Jump Issue #11 and was soon elaborated upon by our buddy Wasted Wisher, who works for the Philippines branch of Toei Animation.
He informed us that the series was not going to be cropped, but rather have the frames extended to the sides to transform the original fullscreen aspect ratio to widescreen. It later turned out that this was merely an assumption based on the fact that the scenes he had been re-animating were being done so in a 4:3 fullscreen format. In late February, comparisons and confusion spread like wild fire after the first DragonBall Kai commercial found its inevitable way onto the internet. In a matter of hours, this commercial shattered all hopes for a non-cropped widescreen version of DragonBall Kai. Instead, we would be seeing a "re-framed" cropped version. Many, including myself and the staff at Daizenshuu EX, said they would not be giving this cropped version a "free pass" and stated the same criticisms that we had years earlier for FUNimation's cropped season sets.
As always, rumors and debates began to circulate throughout the internet. We were left with the ultimate question; why were they cropping the show to widescreen when it was being remastered and re-animated in fullscreen? Things just didn't add up. Then in mid-June, a home video release for the DragonBall Kai TV series was announced and to most fans surprise, the Blu-ray releases would be in a 4:3 fullscreen format, as opposed to the widescreen format used for broadcast. Needless to say, the confusion amongst fans was only multiplied.
In a way, this has brought us full circle, to the beginning of this grand story. If the show was remastered in fullscreen, why did it air on Fuji TV in widescreen? Why were we only now getting to see the show in fullscreen? Had it been their intention to release the series in fullscreen all along but for some reason had to broadcast it in widescreen? To answer these questions, we have to go back to 2003.
In December 2003, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications in Japan announced its push for a transition to Digital Terrestrial Television (DTTV) across the country. As part of their plan, analogue terrestrial television broadcasts in Japan are scheduled to be terminated on July 24, 2011. By 2006, most main broadcasting networks, including Fuji TV, were providing both analogue and digital signals. In 2009, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications began encouraging all terrestrial broadcasting networks to broadcast their analogue signals in a 16:9 letterboxed format, specifically new shows, to allow for the ease of transition to the digital terrestrial broadcasting which would be broadcast in a true 16:9 widescreen format. Again, most main broadcasting networks began doing this immediately, as it was also announced that this would begin to be fully enforced in January 2011.
Based on this, I think it is safe to assume that DragonBall Kai was never intended to be presented in widescreen. We know the remastering, re-animating, and new opening/ending animations were done in fullscreen, which implies they had every intention of releasing the series in fullscreen, but due to Japan's transition to digital terrestrial television, Fuji TV had no choice but to broadcast the series in widescreen. So, no matter what their initial intentions were, the series was doomed to be cropped from the very beginning whether it was going to be in HD or not. Unlike an unnamed company who cropped the show for the sake of cropping it, Fuji TV and Toei Animation had to crop the series if they wanted it to be broadcast on television. Now I'm not justifying the cropping of a fullscreen series, in fact I don't like the idea at all. I'm not even saying this justifies all of the other stupid things they have done with the series or the other confusing fact that the DVD releases will be in widescreen. But I think it's important to note these facts and understand what is really going on and why it was cropped to begin with.
Initially many of us jumped up to point blame, while others simply laughed that the cropping issue was happening in Japan as it had here in North America. However, now that we know the series will be seeing a home video release in fullscreen, can we look past the cropping issue? I don't know. Can we say it was justified? I don't know. I guess you'll just have to decide for yourself. But I hope that my research has at least enlightened you a little. Just think, if Japan wasn't making a push for digital terrestrial television, we may be watching DragonBall Kai in fullscreen right now, "the way it was meant to be seen".
EDIT

[table=head]Episode # | Ratings Share % | TV Ranking
001 | 11.3 | 4th
002 | 09.8 | 3rd
003 | 09.6 | 4th
004|11.1|4th
005|08.8|6th
006|09.1|6th
