Ode to Kirihito tells the story of the passionate and well-liked young doctor Osanai Kirihito and his ambitious and ruthless rival Tatsugaura who are both investigating a rare incurable disease called ‘Monmow,’ found only in the remote village of Inugamisawa (here translated as Doggodale), which makes the bones of the body shrink and enlarge in strange proportions, making the body of the sufferer twist into a doglike shape before death.
Osanai, caught between the allure of his urban medical world and the rural peace offered by the remote village, does his best to help the victims retain their humanity in the face of a medical establishment which views them only as guinea pigs and oddities. Meanwhile, Tatsugaura schemes against Osanai and tries to infect his rival with the disease in order to gain fame from researching the results.
The story focuses on Osanai’s sufferings and journey of self-discovery, and his romantic relationships with his original fiancée Izumi and the Inugamisawa village girl Tazu. Its primary themes are medical corruption, the contrast between modern urban life and the rural, traditional world, and the transformation of the individual through suffering. The second half of the story focuses more on wandering and travel.
