by Aliki Danezi
Film Details
Feature film, 35mm
Shooting starting summer 2007
Synopsis
Chinatown, Athens. 2015. Cleo, 23, of Chinese father and Cypriot mother, learns from dim sum maker Lin that her father didn’t die of natural causes but was murdered by the Chinese mafia. Trained in the martial arts, Cleo swears to take revenge. The wise cook trains her and the shy newcomer Xiao Ping falls in love with her. Cleo doesn’t pay attention. Her impatience makes her fall in her enemy’s trap. Her mother breaks the news to Cyprus…uncle Takis, with Mediterranean ideas about the blood code arrives to her rescue. Cleo confronts her enemies but suspicion grows about Lin’s honesty. Blinded by revenge, she makes a terrible mistake: she kills Lin. She considers abandoning her quest but finds innocent Xiao Ping dead by her enemy’s hand and her rage returns. She kills the mafia leader and Lin’s secret is revealed: Cleo has a twin sister, Mei, snatched at birth by the mafia. Mei is the cruelest executioner of Chinatown. At 13 she killed their father in cold blood. Cleo must kill her sister to take revenge…
Director's Note
The absurdity of a Cypriot Kung Fu movie is the very essence of this film that has as a theme the search for identity. A fast-paced splatter film with a beautiful “killer queen” protagonist who tries to find herself between her father’s Chinese side and her mother’s Cypriot roots that have at least one thing in common – a tradition of revenge. The blood will gush, the steel of strange weapons will shine and colors will be saturated to push the story beyond the limits of the realistic. The appearance of Cypriot characters, suddenly interrupting this atmosphere of Chinese fairytale, will give the film a lighter, humorous tone. It is a postmodern approach which reaches out to parody without ever becoming one. Strong atmosphere, detailed sound design and a respect for the martial arts tradition will create this fusion where everything seems new but at the same time familiar. We dare to imagine a Cypriot martial arts film with the same ease that “Smells like Teen Spirit” is sung in Chinese. Finally, this is not a multimillion-budget production. The uniqueness of this film lies in the peculiar combination of its components.
