Πάμε λοιπόν σ' ένα από τα πλέον αγαπημένα μου tropes: breaking the fourth wall.

Για αρχή, το βραβευμένο με Oscar animation short του βρετανού animator Daniel Greaves με τίτλο Manipulation.

A cartoon character is drawn and then rubbed out. He reappears, tries to stay on screen and then tries to escape his creator's clutches. This unfortunate state of affairs for the character gives rise to a series of funny situations. This is literal manipulation, as well as a reflection on manipulation in the figurative sense.

Daniel Greaves' Oscar-winning film cleverly mixes human hands and a drawn animated character. This technique is called pixilation, shooting the live action of the hands frame by frame alongside the character animation, making them to appear to be interacting with one another. What makes the film funny is the anticipation and the sense of the unexpected, and the way in which it playfully comments on the animation process.

Daniel Greaves - Manipulation

Duck Amuck is a surreal animated cartoon directed by Chuck Jones and produced by Warner Bros. Cartoons. The short was released in early 1953 by The Vitaphone Corporation, the short subject division of Warner Bros. Pictures, as part of the Merrie Melodies series. It stars Daffy Duck, who is tormented by a seemingly sadistic, initially unseen animator, who constantly changes Daffy's locations, clothing, voice, physical appearance and even shape. Pandemonium reigns throughout the cartoon as Daffy attempts to steer the action back to some kind of normality, only for the animator to either ignore him or, more frequently, to over-literally interpret his increasingly frantic demands.

In 1994, it was voted #2 of The 50 Greatest Cartoons of all time by members of the animation field, losing only to What's Opera, Doc? Historians and fans consider Duck Amuck to be Daffy Duck's magnum opus, and What's Opera, Doc? to be Bugs's, so the positions at #2 and #1 are appropriate. The short was included on Looney Tunes Golden Collection: Volume 1.

Chuck Jones - Duck Amuck

THE RETURN OF JOHN FRUM

The Well of a Thousand Words

Challenge: Create an image out of a word, using only the letters in the word itself.

Rule: Use only the graphic elements of the letters without adding outside parts.

The story about a mongoose gives an extraordinary opportunity to play with an animal’s plasticity on the screen. A mongoose jumps, spins, sneaks, fights with a slithering snake. In fact the entire cartoon film is based on an idea of the static and moving clash, on the conflict of smooth movement with pulsing, the struggle of serene calmness and springy action.

Strictly speaking, the whole cartoon is woven of this dialectics, but primarily its protagonist – a mongoose, a living embodiment of an idea of movement. It is no wonder that Rikki-Tikki-Tavi wins struggle against the cobras, because a mongoose is THE struggle of opposites and their inner harmony: has the springy gait, is able to creep smoothly, suddenly jump up on a place, be like a spinning top… In short, this hero is not just a mongoose, but also a cobra in «the braided kind», secretly owns a plasticity of the opponent.

In our latitudes a mongoose can be found in a zoo only. But who paid attention how a cat sleeps on the pillow, curled up in a ball, how creeps in a front garden grass, how chases for its tail, – definitely shall appreciate the force and beauty of the cartoon film’s design.

Not only the protagonist, but also the space around is subordinated to the same cosmological law: the watercolour world is steady and constant, even if the sky is cut by lightning strokes, the thunder rattles and the clear lines-waves stream. In an animated short story, the filmmakers have combined Modernism with Epic, the conditional nature of a picture with the naturalness of movements, saturated it with colour and air. The 1960s minimalist aesthetics is softly combined with an oriental colour, showing the compositional miracles – multi-figured, simple and harmonious – almost Biblical, like in the frescoes. People gathered for the dinner, and an evil serpent appeared. No need to panic: Rikki-Tikki-Tavi shall drive out a cobra from this part of Eden.
