Summary:
Based on the book "Musashi" by Eiji Yoshikawa, Vagabond is an award-winning, fictional retelling of the life of Miyamoto Mushashi, often referred to as the "Sword Saint" - perhaps the most famous and successful of Japan's sword fighters. Shinmen Takezo is destined to become the legendary sword-saint, Shinmen Takezō also known as Miyamoto Musashi, perhaps the most renowned samurai of all time. For now, Takezo is a cold-hearted killer, who will take on anyone in mortal combat to make a name for himself. This is the journey of a wild young brute who strives to reach enlightenment by way of the sword - fighting on the edge of death.
Musashi, as he is often simply known, became legendary through his outstanding swordsmanship in numerous duels, even from a very young age. He is the founder of the Hyōhō Niten Ichi-ryū or Niten-ryū style of swordsmanship and the author of The Book of Five Rings a book on strategy, tactics, and philosophy that is still studied today.
The manga, Vagabond, won the Grand Prize for manga at the 2000 Japan Media Arts Festival, the 24th Kodansha Manga Award, as well as the Tezuka Ozamu Cultural Prize.
Summary:
Growing up in 17th century Sengoku era Japan, Shinmen Takezou is shunned by the local villagers as a devil child due to his wild and violent nature. Running away from home with a fellow boy at age 17, Takezou joins the Toyotomi army to fight the Tokugawa clan at the battle of Sekigahara. However, the Tokugawa win a crushing victory, leading to nearly three hundred years of Shogunate rule. Takezou and his friend manage to survive the battle, and afterwards swear to do great things with their lives. But after their paths separate, Takezou becomes a wanted criminal, and must change his name and his nature in order to escape an ignoble death. Δεν το πιστεύω ότι δεν υπάρχει thread γι' αυτό το αριστουργηματικό, από άποψη πλοκής και σχεδιαστικού στυλ, manga!
Έχοντας ακούσει τα καλύτερα αποφάσισα, επιτέλους μετά από αρκετό καιρό, να του ρίξω μια ματιά και πραγματικά έμεινα με το στόμα ανοιχτό τόσο από το σχέδιο, όσο και την ιστορία που διηγείται.
Το σχέδιο, αν όχι καλύτερο, είναι εύκολα ισάξια συγκρίσιμο με του Berserk (κοινώς, για όσους δεν γνωρίζουν/διαβάζουν την αγαπημένη μου manga σειρά αυτή, σημαίνει ότι είναι καταπληκτικό, εξαίσιο ). Η ιστορία πάλι, σε διαφορά με το δεύτερο, προέρχεται από νουβέλα οπότε και έχουμε ένα (ακόμη πιο) "ώριμο" περιεχόμενο, χωρίς υπερφυσικά στοιχεία. Και τα 2 ωστόσο έχουν κοινό στοιχείο τις αιματοχυσίες, καθώς και ότι περιέχουν πολλούς τόμους και είναι ακόμη ongoing μετά από αρκετό καιρό, χωρίς να είναι γνωστό το πότε θα τελειώσουν.
Τα πρώτα 27 από τα 31 volumes τα βρίσκετε στο BakaBT, σε καλό έως decent quality από τους Manga-Sketchbook, ενώ τα υπόλοιπα αναγκαστικά στο MangaTraders από τρίτα groups, τα οποία (δυστυχώς ) δεν χαίρουν του ίδιου quality με τους προκατόχους τους και τα κατεβάζετε ίσα για να δείτε την συνέχεια της ιστορίας, αλλά όχι για storing. Απ' όσο γνωρίζω δεν υπάρχουν ακόμη HQ κυκλοφορίες των τελευταίων volumes, θα τις αρπάξω σαν βγουν.
